Who really enjoys an early morning start on a cold, dark day? The roads had been gritted, that was a plus. It still took some determination to step out into the chilly predawn air.

Sometimes, as photographers, we have to overlook the 'suffering' of getting up early, putting on too many layers of clothing and still getting cold over time. We do it anyway for the reward of being out with friends, especially a certain Jon, and the hope of achieving a couple of images that we are pleased with.

Jon, Claire, Tricia and I all met up at the car park at the bottom of Links Hill in Lowestoft at 7 am on this dark and icy morning. Helen, who would normally have come along as well, had wisely opted for a mini‑break instead. No judgment there!

We had set the date in the hope of capturing the sunrise. Unfortunately, the sun, being lazy today, took longer to appear than we had thought! Not to worry, though. Our time was still filled with achieving the 'milky effect' of the waves on the seafront using slow shutter speeds and occasionally using filters that Jon had brought along. We nearly came a cropper when the sea took a turn and almost enveloped a couple of tripods and cameras.

Claire and I surrendered to the cold at one point and wandered up to the Sparrow's Nest Café for a coffee and a shared sausage roll. A welcome break from the cold chill.

All of us had a thoroughly enjoyable morning, and it certainly has motivated me to go again.

We hope you enjoy some images from our morning adventure.
