For the first meeting of 2026 member Dave Hornsey gave an interesting talk on the journey that he and his wife Janet had made to Namibia and Botswana.

Showing a superb selection of projected images taken by the couple over a period of 6 weeks commencing with photographs of the amazing sand dunes in Namibia. Dave did admit that he was a little younger when they climbed to the top after arriving as soon as the gates to the National Park were open.

Frequently staying until the park closed at sunset to get the best shots. They had hired a 4-wheel drive vehicle that offered a small number of creature comforts including a fridge and inflatable tent on the roof for sleeping.

The roads in many places were little more than dirt tracks and on one occasion a puncture had proved difficult to repair. Although they had two spare wheels soft ground made it difficult to lift the heavy vehicle to a height where the wheel with the damaged tyre could be safely replaced.

After the dramatic views of the large sand dunes Dave and Janet moved to the areas where large numbers of game could be photographed before crossing into Botswana where they made trips by boat to capture images of hippos and crocodile’s as well as lions, elephants and the abundant wild birds.

A thoroughly enjoyable evening that was rounded off by a vote of thanks by member Mike Lloyd.
